Kia Ora readers,
This week we have been reading about some Maori Legends and we had to rewrite them but we cannot change anything important in the story. We are learning how to rewrite Maori Legends so it might be not good but i tried. This one is The creation of the South Island. For me this took a while since there was some distractions but i finally finished it and here it is.
The creation of the South Island
Pouākai is a bird who eats people and his/her nest is at the summit of Mt Torless and they could see below is the flax, toitoi roupo, swamps and the was a forest on the mountain. The rivers below looked like ribbons twisting to the sea and there was a village nearby where Pouākai lived called Pa (village). As villagers went to get their food the villagers never came back and the people started to notice and began to worry the fact that villagers were missing so a brave man called Ruru to was a fast runner wanted to kill Pouākai but he didn´t knew who then and idea came up to his mind and had a plan but he needed some help but some sacrifices might be made but all he wants is the safety of the village.
He chose 40 of the bravest men and to kill Pouākai and told them the plan but they could only do it at night.night began to fall and Poakai was asleep so all of the men reached the mountain and started to build a cage that could fit 40 men and Pouākai. The sun began to rise and Ruru was out of the cage because he was the bait. Pouākai saw Ruru teasing him and started chasing him and Ruru leading him to the cage but he landed on top of the cage. Pouākai tried to get him but he got stuck and the man chopped his legs and his wings as Pouākai was shaking the cage to get out and killed some men, he shook the cage and more and more men got killed. Some were still alive, Ruru was one of them, and the men finished Pouākai with clubs made with wood and now the villagers won't be harmed while getting their food.
